Even if you aren't an active participant in the beauty world, you're sure to have come across the term 'balayage.' What started off as a freehand hairstyling technique slowly turned into a much-requested salon service that almost everybody was sporting a few years ago. But it's 2018 so you can't expect a basic hairstyling technique like that to still be making a splash, now can you?

Enter glitterage; the cool older sister of balayage that's just arrived on the scene. We've spotted our fair share of glitter roots at Coachella but glitterage is a first for us. Like its predecessor, glitterage is also a freehand technique, except with the additional use of glitter and we know how much a little sparkle can make all the difference. 2018 was predicted as the year in which it would rain shimmer and by looks of it's very first beauty trend, that prediction seems to be pretty accurate.

Also being termed as glitter highlights, glitterage was brought to life by Denver-based hairstylist Danielle Wade. Although she previously tried the trend on her clients, it has picked up steam only in the past few days with hairstylists all over social media giving it a try. To create the glitter laden hair look, Danielle sections the hair and paints each layer with liquid glitter to get a full-fledged sparkle fest on the mane. For the seamless blend that balayage is so famous for, Danielle goes ahead and mixes a few shades of glitter for a gentle transition through the tresses.

The best part about it? It's temporary. Yes, a cheerful glitterage job only lasts until your next hair wash. And what's better than a funky hair trend without the commitment of wearing it daily? Absolutely, positively nothing. Glitterage seems simple enough to DIY with hair gel and glitter so for the risk-takers out there, it could be a crafty weekend project. Since we know how tiresome removing glitter can be, if you do attempt it, brush it off first then head to the shower as it can make the removal process a tad easier. Glitterage is all set to shine on social media so for once, may you should try this at home.
