Minor Explosion Outside National Investigation Agency's Office in Kolkata

The blast took place just 50 feet away from the entry gate of the complex.

Kolkata: A minor explosion took place on Monday evening near the boundary wall of the Central Reserve Police Force or CRPF complex in Kolkata, where the National Investigation Agency or NIA has set up a camp office to probe the Burdwan blast case.

The explosion took place around 7 pm, just 50 feet away from the entry gate, in Kolkata's Salt Lake. The sound of the blast was deafeningly loud.

"Yes, the noise was unusually loud," confirmed an NIA official who was inside the CRPF camp at the time of the blast.

Senior police officials of the Bidhannagar Commissionerate rushed to the spot. The blast site was cordoned off and samples collected for forensic tests.

"There is no typical smell of an explosion but forensic tests will reveal what chemicals were used to cause the blast," said Deputy Commissioner of Police K Barui.

"Samples will also be tested for chemicals which can cause a loud sound," said D Dhar, Additional Deputy Commissioner, adding, "The location of the blast could be significant."

The location, indeed, is significant. The explosion took place very close to the gate of the CRPF complex, where the NIA officers are staying as well.

Moreover, several terror suspects arrested for links with the blast in Burdwan on October 2 are being held and questioned in the CRPF complex.
