The Bidhannagar Police arrested the three men from Haroa in North 24 Parganas, about 70 km from Kolkata, today. All three are residents of Kolkata. The car in which the crime was committed was found near Subhash Sarobar in the city. A fourth man involved in the crime is missing but the police says they will nab him soon.
"The three men have admitted to their crime. They will be produced in court tomorrow," said Javed Shamim, Commissioner, Bidhannagar Police.
According to details emerging of the case, the woman was outside a nightclub in Salt Lake's sector 5 and asked one of the three accused for directions. As he was speaking to her, two other men in a car drove up and dragged the woman in.
They allegedly then drove to New Town, about 3 km away, parked the car on a deserted road near a water park and assaulted the woman. At around 3 am, they were driving down the road next to the canal in Salt Lake's Baisakhi area when the woman jumped off the car. The men sped off.
A taxi driver passing by reported the incident to a police outpost nearby which sent a team to pick up the woman and take her to the police station.
Opposition parties BJP and CPM held protests in front of two police stations in Salt Lake today. In the state Assembly, Opposition leaders met chief minister Mamata Banerjee and demanded stepped up security in the IT hub in particular and Kolkata in general.
At the IT hub, workers said that on weekdays, the area was full of people late at night. But on weekends, there were very few people and no police presence.
"Patrolling must be stepped up in the weekends too," said Aniket, an IT worker.
Shreya Mitra, also working in Sector 5, said, "Kolkata is becoming like Delhi. It's just not safe."
