Urban turnout has edge over rural voters in Delhi
New Delhi:

Intense 'Pappu' campaigns, which appealed to the electorate to vote and launched during the Assembly elections here, failed to enthuse rural voters this time as was evident by low turnout in villages in the capital.

Compared to the rural voters, the urban electorate performed better at the hustings by coming out to cast their franchise taking the voting percentage to 51.79.

Of the seven constituencies, Northwest Delhi (reserved) which has been carved out from Outer Delhi following delimitation, has a sizable number of rural villages such as Narela, Badli, Rithala, Bawana and Mundaka reported a dismal turnout of 47.44 per cent.

Compared to it, the Lok Sabha seats such as East Delhi (53.56) and New Delhi having urban population have shown better performance at the hustings, suggesting 'Pappu' campaign's popularity in urban areas.

Besides 'Pappu', the Election Commission had also run advertisements in television and print medium worth lakhs of rupees to encourage the voters to turn out in large numbers.

While New Delhi has reported 55.82 per cent turnout, West Delhi recorded 52.50. The total polling turnout was 51.79 per cent in the city.
