Indefinite curfew has been imposed in Srinagar with tension growing after a 25-year-old woman was killed when a stray bullet hit her in the Batmaloo area. Earlier on Tuesday, a young man was killed allegedly in clashes between security forces and protesters.
The Jammu and Kashmir Police issued a statement on the woman's death saying, "While dealing with very heavy pelting by protesters at Lachmanpora, Batmaloo, security forces fired in the air. A stray bullet hit a girl who was watching from the window of her house. She was taken to hospital where she was declared brought dead."
The "pelting" refers to protesters throwing stones at security forces.
On Tuesday morning, a young man Fayaz Ahmed was killed allegedly in clashes between security forces and a group of people protesting against the disappearance of a Class XI student, Muzaffar, on Monday.
The protesters began throwing stones at security men in a locality called Tengpura and 18-year-old Fayaz was allegedly killed in the clashes that followed. Locals claim that he died in CRPF firing, but the CRPF has strongly denied this.
Top sources in the CRPF, in fact, say that their personnel have shown restraint in the Valley.
Meanwhile, the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Omar Abdullah, is out visiting the troubled areas in the state. On Monday, he was at Baramulla and today he is expected at Anantnag.
Only last week, after a spurt of violence in the Valley, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had called an emergency meet, where he said political steps were needed to bring Kashmir situation under control. The PM had also advised Omar to visit troubled spots.
