Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kamal Nath is expected to meet Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj today to try and ensure that Parliament functions and the government is able to push important legislation in the last two weeks of the Budget Session.

Government sources have told NDTV that if the current logjam does not get resolved, bills in the house will be passed amid the din. The Finance Bill along with Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) will be taken up in the Lok Sabha and voted on 7 May.

There was chaos in Parliament today as the BJP demanded that the Prime Minister should resign for his government's alleged attempt to influence the CBI's report on its investigation into how coal fields were allotted.

Under attack over the CBI coal report, the Congress core group is meeting in the PM's office in parliament. The meeting of the Core Group was convened immediately after both Houses were adjourned over the issue for half an hour in the morning.

The meeting, which was also attended by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kamal Nath discussed the strategy ahead in wake of the Opposition reviving its attack on the government on the coal  issue and bringing the Prime Minister as well under the target.

BSP chief Mayawati speaks in Rajya Sabha

  • We had a strong anti-rape bill passed but unfortunately that has not been a deterrent.
  • In Delhi, when a rape takes place, that is taken note of.
  • We should not be partisan about these matters, we must think across party lines.
  • We need to amend the law - there should be a time fixed for hearing and the perpetrators should be given the death penalty.
  • When such incidents take place, police also need to be sensitive, there are often complaints with police action... reforms are needed in the police department too.
  • Appeal to Home Minster to pay heed to suggestions...
  • Chides Deputy Chairman - says please pay attention to cases of atrocities on Scheduled Castes/Tribes.
  • The word Harijan should not be used, that is unconstitutional.
  • Appeal for Home Minister... please call an all-party meeting and if we need to amend the anti-rape bill that should be done in this session of Parliament

  • I want to ask the UPA government who will take measures so that women feel secure. I urge the government to take strong steps, we are all with you.
  • I had asked in the debate on the anti-rape bill whether law enforcement agencies have enough manpower.
  • We should hand out the death penalty for such heinous crimes expediently - not through the lengthy court process that we usually have.

In an effort to ensure that the Rajya Sabha functions, Chairman Hamid Ansari has offered structured debates on all issues that the opposition wants to raise.

He has already allowed a discussion on growing crime against women after the Opposition created a ruckus over the brutal rape of a five-year-old girl in Delhi last week.
