Ranchi doctors call strike; patients bear the brunt

Ranchi: About 600 junior doctors from the super specialty government hospital, the biggest in Jharkhand, are on strike. Their complaint, patients' relatives often assault them and the administration does nothing to help.

Even the nurses union is supporting the strike.

"There are 600 doctors here. Just a few days ago, one of our doctors was beaten by the cronies of a local politician. Now we have decided that unless we are provided with security, preferably given the medical health care protection act, we will not break our strike," said Dr Kunal, representative, Junior Doctors Association.

But like in every other deadlock, even here the brunt is being borne by patients. Caught in the middle of this conflict, are patients like Shatrughan, who was admitted to the hospital 10 days ago with a serious liver ailment.

"You can see for yourself. There are no doctors, no nurses. I have a serious problem, but no one has bothered to check me. I think I might just die," said Shatrughan.

The administration says it's trying to cope by calling in doctors from government hospitals across the state. One round of talks between the doctors and the management has already failed. So far, there are no signs of the stalemate ending anytime soon.
