President Pranab Mukherjee to be 'Pranab Sir' for Teacher's Day
New Delhi: President Pranab Mukherjee will be professor for a day next month, when teacher's day is celebrated across India.

The President has been invited by Delhi's Aam Aadmi Party government to teach in a school a day before the celebrations on September 5. He has accepted, an aide confirmed.

"The President has consented to interact with students and teachers of Dr. Rajendra Prasad Sarvodaya Vidyalaya, New Delhi from 11.30 AM to 1.00 PM on 4th September," a statement from Rashtrapati Bhawan said.

Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia told reporters: "We had a meeting with the President on this and he was so impressed with the idea that he immediately accepted it and today he has given his consent also."

Last year, Mr Mukherjee, 79, had said in a message on Teacher's Day that "students should show utmost respect and devotion to teachers who in turn must dedicate themselves to the service of their students."

One of Mr Mukherjee's predecessors, APJ Abdul Kalam, was known for his impromptu sessions with students or visits to classrooms. Dr Kalam, one of India's leading missile scientists, died last month.

"Teacher's Day" marks the birth anniversary of a teacher who became president - Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. He was India's second President and one of the country's most respected figures.

"This will be yet another milestone when the first citizen of India will interact with the students and teach them the lessons of life," Mr Sisodia said.
