New Delhi: The CBI will seek authentication of the report of killing of LTTE chief Velupillai Prabhakaran and its intelligence chief Pottu Amman from Sri Lanka to bring to an end its trail of the two remaining accused in the 18-year-old Rajiv Gandhi assassination case.
"We are trying to contact our Embassy in Colombo to get the information authenticated. As soon as we receive authenticated information, action will be taken as per law," a CBI spokesperson said here.
Prabhakaran and Pottu Amman were the only two accused wanted in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case.
The third, Akila, women wing Chief, was the third accused. However, she was killed in 1995 by Sri Lankan army and the CBI had abated charges against her.
Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated by LTTE terrorists on May 18, 1991 and the CBI after arresting 26 people including 13 Sri Lankan nationals were arrested. An Interpol Red Corner Notice was issued against Prabhakaran and Pottu Amman.
If the confirmation about the death was received, this would end the trial of the wanted accused in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, a CBI official said, adding that the agency would approach the court and file an appeal for abating charges against the two.
CBI was the first organisation which blew the lid over LTTE's terror network in India as the agency gave detailed description about its functioning in its chargesheet.
