Nuclear-capable Prithvi II test-fired

Nuclear-capable Prithvi II test-fired
Chandipur, Orissa: India on Monday successfully test-fired in quick succession two nuclear-capable Prithvi-II surface-to-surface missiles with a range of 350 km from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur in Orissa.

This test was conducted to enable the special army unit under the strategic forces command - which handles nuclear capable missiles - to familiarise itself in handling and firing these nuclear-tip ballistic missiles under battle field conditions.

These missiles are mainly planned to be deployed in case of an offensive against Pakistan, which has its own short range missile that can carry a 500 kg nuclear payload.

A similar Chinese missile has almost double the range at 600 km; it too can carry a 500 kg warhead, but not a nuclear bomb.
