Patna: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, accused by former ally the Bharatiya Janata Party or BJP of placating the Muslims by not speaking on Yasin Bhatkal's arrest last week, has finally broken his silence.

"The Bihar Police has done its job professionally by cooperating with central agencies. Some people have great knowledge of facts to which I can't react," said Mr Kumar, responding to the controversy over why his government did not ask for the remand of the alleged co-founder of the Indian Mujahideen.

The Chief Minister even suggested rewarding the Bihar cops who arrested Bhatkal on Wednesday night on the porous Indo-Nepal border in a joint operation with the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

"We're not in the business of taking credit, we rather believe in sharing it," Mr Kumar said.

The BJP had accused the Bihar government of a weak role in the arrest of Bhatkal. "The Bihar government wanted the arrest be shown in Uttar Pradesh or some other state. There should not be a soft corner for people involved in terror activities. He (Yasin Bhatkal) should have been interrogated," BJP's Sushil Kumar Modi had said last week. (Read)
