Raped, Slashed With Blades, 12-Year-Old Attempts Suicide As Accused Walks Free

The girl, who is below 18, was taken to hospital with 40 per cent burns.

Bhopal: A 12-year-old girl set herself on fire allegedly after days of harassment by a man who was jailed for her rape earlier this year but recently let off on bail.

The man was arrested again today.

Her family says she was extremely distressed when she poured kerosene on herself and lit a match on Wednesday morning. She was taken to hospital with third degree burns on nearly half her body.

"Ever since she was raped by these men, she had been under a lot of pressure and had been living in fear of the accused Shankar and Anil. When Anil was released on bail, she was convinced that Shankar would also come out soon and they will kill her," the girl's father said.

The police say the accused men are from the girl's village in Itarsi, around 90 km from state capital Bhopal.

In February, they allegedly kidnapped her and one of them raped her. The two then attacked her repeatedly with blades and left her for dead.

Both men were caught after the girl went to the police.

Recently in Bihar, the desperation of another young rape survivor dominated headlines and embarrassed the state government when she begged for help on WhatsApp, saying that her alleged rapist was out of jail and his political connections threatened her safety. Accused Raj Ballabh Yadav is a lawmaker of Lalu Yadav's party, which co-governs Bihar with Nitish Kumar. The state government has now asked the Supreme Court to cancel his bail.
