India will bring its non-fossil energy capacity to 500 GW by 2030, said PM Modi

New Delhi:

Scaling up India's ambitious agenda to combat climate change, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday announced five "amrit tatva" at the COP26 Summit including the target to attain net-zero emissions by 2070.

Delivering the National Statement at the COP26 Summit in Glasgow, he said India will increase its capacity of non-fossil energy capacity to 500 GW and meet 50 per cent of its energy requirements through renewable energy by 2030.

He also said that India will make one billion tonne reduction in total projected carbon emissions and reduce carbon intensity in its economy to less than 45 per cent by 2030.

"In the midst of this brainstorming on climate change, I would like to present five "Amrit tatav" on behalf of India," he said.

PM Modi described them as "panchamrit ki saugat".

"India will take its non-fossil energy capacity to 500 GW by 2030. Second, India will meet 50 per cent of its energy requirements from renewable energy by 2030. Third, India will reduce the total projected carbon emissions by one billion tonnes by 2030. Fourth, by 2030, India will reduce the carbon intensity of its economy to less than 45 per cent. And fifth - by 2070, India will achieve the target of net-zero emissions," he said.

India expects developed nations to make climate finance of 1 Trillion dollars available at the earliest. Today it's important to track climate finance just like we track the progress of climate mitigation: PM Narendra Modi at COP26 World Leaders' Summit in Glasgow, Scotland

We know reality that promises made so far over climate finance have proven to be hollow. When we're taking forward our ambition regarding climate action, the ambitions of world over climate finance can't keep standing at the point where they were at the time of Paris Agreement.

Today, when India has resolved to move forward with a new commitment and new energy, then the climate finance and transfer of low-cost technology transfer become even more important: PM Modi

Many traditional communities possess the knowledge to live in harmony with nature. Such traditional practices must get appropriate attention in our adaptation policies. To ensure this knowledge is passed onto our younger generations, we must include it as part of our school syllabi. Preservation of lifestyle per local conditions can be an important pillar of adaptation: PM Modi

I have three views in this regard - We will need to make adaptation the key component of our development policies and projects. COP26: UK launches India Green Guarantee, commits new funds for EVs in India
The UK will provide an "India Green Guarantee" to the World Bank, to unlock an additional 750 million pounds for green projects across India, it was announced at the COP26 summit in Glasgow on Monday.

The green guarantee financing will support clean and resilient infrastructure in sectors such as clean energy, transport and urban development.

Further, in an aid-backed Private Infrastructure Development Group (PIDG), the UK has committed more than 210 million pounds in new investment at the UN climate summit to back transformational green projects in developing countries, including electric vehicles (EVs) in India.

The UK's PIDG financing will go to schemes including electric vehicle manufacturing in India, green bonds in Vietnam and solar power in Burkina Faso, Pakistan, Nepal and Chad - projects which are expected to mobilise more than 470 million pounds in additional private sector finance.

"I want to see the UK''s Green Industrial Revolution go global. The pace of change on clean technology and infrastructure is incredible, but no country should be left behind in the race to save our planet," said British Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

Enough of treating nature like a toilet, UN Chief at COP26
Underlining concerns over the world''s addiction to fossil fuels and climate change, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Monday said the world faces a stark choice warning world leaders to stop "treating nature like a toilet".

In his speech at the COP26 World Leaders' Summit, the UN chief told world leaders that "we are digging our own graves by failing to act fast enough on climate change."

Emphasising that the six years since Paris Climate Agreement have been the six hottest years on record, Guterres said that the world''s addiction to fossil fuels is pushing humanity to the brink.

"We face a stark choice - either we stop it or it stops us. It''s time to say, enough," Guterres added.

He emphasised that "enough of brutalising biodiversity, enough of killing ourselves with Carbon, enough of treating nature like a toilet, enough of burning, drilling and mining our way deeper".

Stressing that the world is digging its own graves, Guterres emphasised that "our planet is changing before our eyes".

He emphasised that change is happening everywhere "from the ocean depths to mountain tops from the melting glaciers to relentless extreme weather events."

Underlining that sea-level rise has doubled that it was 30 years ago, Guterres said that oceans are hotter than ever and getting warmer faster.

"1 Minute To Midnight On Doomsday Clock," Warns Boris Johnson At COP26
A UN conference critical to averting the most disastrous effects of climate change kicked off on Monday, its task made even more daunting by the failure of major industrial nations to agree ambitious new commitments.

The COP26 conference in the Scottish city of Glasgow opened a day after the G20 economies failed to commit to a 2050 target to halt net carbon emissions - a deadline widely cited as necessary to prevent the most extreme global warming.

Instead, their talks in Rome only recognised "the key relevance" of halting net emissions "by or around mid-century", set no timetable for phasing out coal at home and watered down promises to cut emissions of methane, a greenhouse gas many times more powerful than carbon dioxide.

Their commitment to phase out fossil fuel subsidies "over the medium term" echoed wording used by the G20 at a summit in Pittsburgh as long ago as 2009.

COP26 event on "Action and Solidarity - The Critical Decade" commences
The crucial 26th session of the Conference of Parties (COP-26) on climate change began in Glasgow on Monday.

The COP26 - Leaders' Event is named "Action and Solidarity - The Critical Decade". The Summit will be attended by Heads of State/Government of more than 120 countries.

The COP26 to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) that kicked off on October 31 under the Presidency of the UK partnering with Italy in Glasgow will continue till November 12

It will bring parties together to accelerate action towards the goals of the Paris Agreement and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.

The next decade is critical to limit global average temperature increases to 1.5C within reach and adapt to the impact of climate change.

Across mitigation, adaptation and finance, COP26 is a turning point. Global leaders are coming together to show that ambition and discuss what must be done to deliver on the goals of the Paris Agreement.

At COP21, which took place in Paris in 2015, for the first time ever, momentous decisions were taken: every country agreed to work together to limit global warming to well below 2 degrees and aim to limit global average increase in temperature to 1.5 degrees, to adapt to the impacts of a changing climate and to make money available to deliver on these aims.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan skips Glasgow climate summit over 'security'
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Monday he had cancelled his planned attendance at the COP26 climate conference in Glasgow because of a dispute over the security protocol.

Erdogan had been due to travel to Scotland after holding a crunch meeting with US President Joe Biden on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Rome.

But he told reporters on board his flight back to Turkey that the Glasgow event organisers had failed to address his delegation's security concerns.

"When our demands were not met, we gave up on going to Glasgow," the Anadolu state news agency quoted Erdogan as saying.

"This was not only about our own security, but also about the reputation of our country."

A report by the Middle East Eye website cites Turkish sources as saying that organisers had put a limit on the size of Erdogan's travelling delegation.

COP26 organisers issued no immediate comment.

Turkey's parliament this year finally ratified the Paris climate agreement and Erdogan has been stressing his concern for environmental issues ahead of a general election due within the next two years.

Developed nations failed to meet yearly USD 100 billion support goal: Environment minister at COP 26

Developed nations have not only failed to meet the USD 100 billion goal per year of support to developing nations since 2009 but also continue to present it as the ceiling of their ambition all the way to 2025, Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav said at the international climate conference COP 26.

Mr Yadav, who is representing India at the UN Climate Change Conference, made the statement on behalf of the BASIC group of countries - Brazil, South Africa, India and China - at the opening plenary session of the Conference of Parties (COP 26), which began on Sunday.

"Delivered the BASIC statement at opening plenary of COP26 underlining that developed nations have not only failed to meet the USD 100 billion goal per year of support to developing nations since 2009 but also continue to present it as ceiling of their ambition all the way to 2025," Mr Yadav tweeted.

"In a context where developing countries, including BASIC countries, have massively stepped up their climate actions since 2009, it is unacceptable that there is still no matching ambition from developed countries on the enabling means of implementation on climate finance support," he said.
