CWG probe: CBI's focus shifts to Delhi Govt

New Delhi: The CBI is all set to file fresh cases connected with the Commonwealth Games held in Delhi last year.

And for the first time, the focus has shifted from the games Organising Committee (OC) boss Suresh Kalmadi to the Delhi government, specifically its Public Works Department (PWD) which is under Raj Kumar Chauhan - a close aide of Chief Minister Shiela Dikshit.

Chauhan, who the Delhi Lokayukta says should be sacked for allegedly protecting a resort in a tax evasion case, met the Chief Minister today.

It's something Suresh Kalmadi has always alleged.

"The decision has been made at various levels. It is not a decision made by an individual. Nowhere, any decision was made by a member of the Organising Committee," Kalmadi had said last month.

NDTV has learnt that CBI will soon raid civic agencies like the PWD which comes under the Delhi government. The fresh case is linked to laying tracks at various stadiums.

According to investigating officers, the PWD sublet the work of laying tracks to a third party who charged a premium causing major losses to tax payers.

CBI says different agencies were involved in different stadiums.

But the investigating agency's hunt for clues against Suresh Kalmadi has led them nowhere. After going through two of his lockers in Pune along with his wife Meira, all they found was Rs 2 crore worth of jewellery but all above board.

"They have opened our lockers and they have seen our family jewellery which was shown in the tax returns," Suresh Kalmadi's wife Meira said.

The agency is now hoping that the search of eight more of Kalmadi's lockers will throw up something. Otherwise, they will have nothing to justify an arrest.
