33,000 Policemen Have Died in the Line of Duty Since Independence, Says PM Modi: Highlights

Guwahati: Today, as part of his two-day visit to the northeast, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed top police chiefs in Guwahati, Assam.

Here are the highlights:

• More than weapons the potential lies with the one who carries it
• It is important that the right weapons be in right hands
• I have deliberately shifted the conference out of Delhi
  
• It is a great moral booster for North East 
• Role of intelligence gathering is very important for national security
  
• Everyone is wondering...a tradition going on for all these years was broken and this meeting was held here in Guwahati
• In Delhi everyone comes with their own work too....here it's different, biggest gain has come to the people here in the Northeast
  
• My gratitude to all those police officers who are serving the nation
  
• Contributions of policemen should not be ignored in society
• Right weapons should be in right hands
  
• The generation next should know the sacrifices made by these officials
• 33,000 police personnel sacrificing themselves for the nation is not small, their sacrifices shouldn't go in vain
  
• Teach new police recruits about cops who were martyred
  
• Form a task force so that we can come with protocols to honour the fallen policemen
  
• Can the syllabus of police training school be changed so that there sacrifice is remembered and doesn't go to waste
  
• Can the states come up a with an e-book/ souvenir with the details of all those who have died in line of duty, with the photographs. This effort can inspire a lot of people.
• It is up to us, for us - their sacrifices can not die
• Need comprehensive plan to ensure welfare of police families
• Police welfare is another issue - an officer may be very good but it's important that his/her family is well
• Our Home Minister has been a successful CM of a big state and his guidance will be beneficial
• Media keeps looking and projecting only negative picture of the police
• The thinking of the people about our police force needs to change and this can be done through ground realities
• Policemen do a lot of good work but it is not highlighted
• Must change perception about policemen in the country.
• I'm sure each person will have at least one good experience with a cop
• Through you a lot of good things are happening in the nation. Why can't positive stories be put on a website?
• I have a concept of Smart Police in my mind
