Uri: Three soldiers and two policemen were killed on Friday in an audacious militant attack on an army camp near the border in Jammu and Kashmir, in Uri town, where voting for state polls will take place on December 9.
A big group of militants crossed over and four to six of them have been killed, says the army. An Indian officer has been critically injured.
Heavily-armed militants allegedly sneaked across the Line of Control and entered the camp in Uri, a garrison town in Baramulla district, at around 3.30 am.
The militants engaged the forces in intense firing all morning.
Militants allegedly also fired at policemen who rushed to the spot after hearing gunshots. Two policemen were killed instantly.
The army says the firing has stopped and a search is on.
The attack indicates escalation of militant violence in the middle of elections in Jammu and Kashmir. Uri is around 100 km from Srinagar, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi is due to campaign on Monday.
On November 27, three soldiers and five civilians were killed after a group of terrorists crossed over, opened fire at an army column on patrol and entered an unused bunker in the Arnia sector of Jammu. Four militants were also killed.
Top army officials said ceasefire violations at the border by Pakistani troops provided cover to the terrorists as they crossed over into India.
Jammu and Kashmir is voting over five days spread over a month for its next government. The first two days of polling have seen a heavy turnout. Uri and six other constituencies of Baramulla will vote on Tuesday. Results will be declared on December 23.
