What is the criteria to confirm the diagnosis of diabetes?
Question
Both my parents are diabetic and hypertensive. Last year I got my glycosylated haemoglobin (Hb) checked, which was found to be 6.8. A week back it was showing 8.4. I have stopped taking any kind of sugar and also keeping a strict control on my diet. The fasting blood sugar is 89 mg/dl and 75 gm glucose load 2 hours PPBS is 129 mg/dl. Am I a diabetic? What other tests do I need to confirm or rule out diabetes mellitus?

As per your oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) you are not diabetic may be there is problem in A1C assay. For diagnosis of diabetes mellitus (DM), A1C alone is not a criteria. The American Diabetic Association (ADA) diagnostic criteria for DM is as follows: 1. Fasting blood glucose (FBG) >125 mg/dl on two separate occasions. 2. 2 hour post 75 gm glucose >200 mg/dl. 3. Osmotic symptoms plus a RBG of > 200 mg/dl. The tests of blood glucose should be in lab not with glucometer. In your case I presume that there is problem in the A1C test. Get it repeated from a more reliable lab.
