Gurgaon:
The Punjab and Haryana High Court today ruled that commercial vehicle will have to resume paying entry tax at the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway from 6 pm today. A decision on toll collection from private vehicles will however be announced after a hearing on Tuesday.
Anguished over the frequent traffic chaos on the Highway, the High Court had on September 4 restrained the Delhi-Gurgaon Super Connectivity Limited (DGSCL) from collecting toll tax on the Delhi-Gurgaon expressway for 15 days, saying that the concessionaire had not been able to ensure free flow of traffic on the expressway.
On Sunday, a retired judge will inspect the measures taken by the toll collection company to ease the traffic at the expressway. The court will take up the report submitted by the judge in a hearing on Tuesday.
On August 16, the court had asked the toll collection company to put additional collection windows and deploy personnel with hand-held collection machines for smooth traffic movement. But in a report submitted a few days after this, the Gurgaon traffic police told the court that the private body lacked the required staff to deal with the problem. It also accused the concessionaire of being unwilling to spend money for expansion of infrastructure.
The Delhi-Gurgaon Super Connectivity Limited (DGSCL) collects entry tax from commercial vehicles on behalf of the South Delhi Municipal Corporation. Claiming that it was losing a toll tax of Rs. 25 lakh per day due to the High Court order, the South Delhi Municipal Corporation had moved the Supreme Court. But the Supreme Court had refused to stay the court order.
