In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Neelam Sonkar from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was elected from the Lalganj constituency in Uttar Pradesh. He won with 3,24,016 votes defeating Bechai Saroj of the Samajwadi Party (SP) by a margin of 63,086 votes.
In 2009 elections, Dr Bali Ram won the constituency on a Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) ticket by securing 2,07,998 votes (31.59 per cent of the total votes polled in the constituency), defeating Neelam Sonkar of the BJP who received 1,68,050 votes (25.52 per cent).
There are five assembly seats under the constituency: Atrauliya, Nizamabad, Phoolpur Pawai, Didarganj and Lalganj.
Voting for the Lalganj constituency was conducted in the sixth phase of general elections 2019 on May 12.
For the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Neelam Sonker is contesting on a Bharatiya Janata Party ticket. The Indian National Congress has fielded Pankaj Mohan Sonkar, and Sangeeta Azad is contesting on a Bahujan Samaj Party ticket.
