In the 2014 Lok Sabha Elections, Santosh Kumar Gangwar, a BJP candidate, was elected from Bareilly seat in Uttar Pradesh. He received 5,18,258 votes. His closest opponent was Ayesha Islam from Samajwadi Party who received 2,77,573 votes.
In the 2009 General Elections, Praveen Singh Aron was elected on a Congress ticket. Santosh Gangwar, BJP, had lost only by a margin of 9,338 votes.
Bareilly seat has gone to BJP for five terms and BJP would want to return to parliament from Bareilly seat for another term.
In 1957, Satish Chandra was elected on a Congress ticket. In 1962, Brijraj Singh was elected on a JS ticket. In 1967, B.B. Lal from BJS was elected to Parliament from Bareilly. In 1971, Satish Chandra returned to parliament on a Congress ticket. In 1977, Ram Murti was elected on a ticket from BLD.
In 1980, Nisar Yar Khan was elected on a JNP (S) ticket. In 1984, Abida Ahmad was elected on a ticket from Congress. In 1989, 1991, 1996, 1998, and 2004, Santosh Gangwar was elected from Bareilly on a ticket from BJP.
For General Election 2019, Congress has fielded Praveen Singh Aron, SP has fielded Bhagwat Saran Gangwar, CPI has fielded Satish Kumar, and BJP has fielded Santosh Kumar Gangwar.
There are five assembly segments under the Bareilly parliamentary constituency. These include Bareilly, Bareilly Cantt., Bhojipura, Meerganj, and Nawabganj.
