Times World University Rankings 2021: Again, No Indian University In Top 300

The result of Times World University Rankings 2021 has been announced. In the overall category, University of Oxford, United Kingdom, has topped the list. Indian Institute of Science, or IISc, Bengaluru, has been placed in the 301-350 category in overall global rankings.

In April, seven of the top Indian Institute of Technology (IITs), including IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay, IIT Madras, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Roorkee and IIT Guwahati, had announced they were collectively boycotting the rankings. "These IITs will reconsider their decision next year if Times Higher Education is able to convince them about the parameters and transparency in their ranking process," their joint press statement had said.

The newer IITs continue to participate although they have slipped in the ranks as well. IIT Ropar, which was in the 301-350 bracket last year, is now in the 351-400 bracket. Beyond 200, the THE World University Rankings does not assign individual ranks but places institutions in brackets instead.

IIT Indore has been placed in the 401-500 bracket. As many as 15 institutes, including Banaras Hindu University and Delhi University, are at the 601-800 bracket.

All top 10 institutions in THE Wold University rankings 2021 are from the United States and the United Kingdom.

Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), New Delhi, has maintained its position in the global rankings and has also improved its rank among Indian Institutions.

As per THE data, JMI improved its rank from 19th to 12th this year among Indian Institutions and globally it has maintained its rank between 601-800 bracket, an official statement said.

A total of 1527 institutions from 93 countries were assessed by THE in comparison to 1400 institutions from 92 countries last year. Number of Indian Institutions also increased to 63 from 56 assessed last year by the agency.

For the World University Rankings, THE's in-house data team assessed a total of 1,527 institutions from 93 countries.

THE World University Rankings 2021 has considered five parameters for assessing universities: Teaching (30%), Research (30%), Citations (30%), Industry Income (2.5%) and International Outlook (7.5%).
