An alleged robber was today arrested in a high-speed chase in which a police official sustained bullet injuries in south-east Delhi, police said on Wednesday.
Furkan (22), was overpowered by a police team and the injured cop who was not deterred from the chase despite being shot at by the two accused, for whom two special pickets were set up near Nizamuddin-Sarai Kale Khan area.
While Furkan, who was pillion riding on a motorbike, landed in police net after a fall, his partner-in-crime, Shahjad, who is also his maternal uncle, sped away, DCP (South East) M S Randhawa said.
According to the police, it came to light that two persons had been committing robberies on a yellow motorcycle which did not have a number plate, in Sunlight Colony and the adjoining areas. The duo were trigger-happy in nature and did not think twice before firing at their victims.
It was reasoned that these criminals used NH-24 and the Ring Road stretch near Sarai Kale Khan to approach and escape from their areas of operation in south-east Delhi.
Accordingly, pickets were deployed at Nizamuddin Bridge NH-24 and at a traffic intersection near Sarai Kale Khan. The cops deployed there were specifically briefed to remain alert about the yellow motorcycle.
About 10 PM on Tuesday, the accused duo approached one of the pickets and did not stop on being flagged down. The team deployed there passed on the message immediately through wire, Mr Randhawa said.
Within a minute, another team deployed near the Maharani Bagh bus stand tracked the duo and started chasing them.
During the chase, Furkan turned back and allegedly fired at the cops. One of the bullets hit Sub-Inspector Bijender Singh on his wrist, the DCP said.
Soon, Mr Singh was joined by the police team deployed at the picket which the criminals had dodged and together they continued the chase. Later, the yellow motorbike hit another vehicle and Furkan fell down on the road.
However, Shahzad did not stop for his partner and sped away, a police official said.
During interrogation, Furkan disclosed that he and his uncle were natives of Bulandshahr in Uttar Pradesh and they had rented a room at Behrampur in Noida from where they used to come to Delhi every day to commit crime, the official said.
"They used to carry country-made pistols to thwart resistance from public. They disclosed their involvement in several cases of robbery with similar modus operandi which are being verified," the official said, adding, the cops have recovered a pistol and three empty cartridges from Furkan's possession.
