New Delhi: Around two lakh street lights in south Delhi municipal areas will be replaced with LEDs under a project taken up by SDMC in a move to cut down greenhouse gas emissions and save electricity.
So far 62,000 street lights have been fitted with LEDs. Two lakh more street lights will be replaced, which will bring down the monthly power bill of street lighting by 53.61 per cent, officials said.
"It will save 5.4 crore unit of electricity and an annual savings of Rs 48.49 crore," South Delhi Municipal Corporation Commissioner Punit Goyal today said while presenting budget of the civic body.
Replacement of other sources of light like sodium lights with LEDs will also cut down on greenhouse gas emissions.
"The project will help in reducing carbon dioxide emissions equivalent to 41,500 tons," Mr Goyal said.
The SDMC signed an MoU with Power Ministry's Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) whereby all the two lakh street lights in the municipal areas will be replaced by LEDs. "Cost of the project will be borne by EESL. The corporation will pay to the company from the savings due to reduced annual power bill in installments for the next 7 years," the commissioner added.
