Rash driving kills Under-19 cricketer in Mumbai
Mumbai: His dreams of playing for the under-19 Mumbai cricket team were snapped short, when Rohan Manjrekar, nephew of filmmaker Mahesh Manjrekar, rammed his bike into a taxi at Matunga on Monday evening.

He was rushed to Sion hospital but was declared dead on admission, said police.

Rohan, a first year student of Ramnarain Ruia College, had been selected for an important camp just a fortnight ago.

"His practice camp was scheduled to begin from tomorrow," said Aniruddh Goud (18), who was riding pillion with Rohan.

Goud sustained minor injuries and was discharged after first-aid medical treatment. Rohan's friends said that he had a promising career in cricket and dreamt of playing for the country.

Preliminary investigations revealed that Rohan was speeding and lost control when he saw a bus coming from the opposite direction. He rammed into a taxi that was plying alongside.

"We have arrested the taxi driver Abdul Hamid for negligent driving and are further investigating the case," said Senior Police Inspector Sunil Deshmukh from Matunga police station.

The police have ruled out the consumption of alcohol or drugs by the victim. "It was a clear case of over-speeding and rash driving," added Deshmukh.

Eyewitnesses told the police that Rohan was zooming past and rammed into the taxi after losing control.

An off-spinner and a student of IES VN Sule Guruji School, Dadar, Rohan had got admission in Ruia college through sports quota, said police.

"We were planning a party for Rohan's birthday on October 28," said Goud. At the time of the accident, the two were going towards Sion to meet a friend.
