Mumbai: BMC not to reimpose water cuts

Mumbai: Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to withdraw the water cuts imposed in the metropolis over a year ago as the lakes supplying water to it
are full to the brim.

"We will withdraw the water cuts as the existing stock in all six lakes, which provide water to the city, is enough to suffice the needs of Mumbaikars till August 2011," a civic official from BMC's hydraulic department said.

In the backdrop of the Govinda and Ganesh festival, the civic body had in September started full water supply to the city.

"There seems to be no need to re-impose any further water cuts as the lakes are full. There will be no water cuts in the near future," the official said.

BMC had decided to hold a water review meeting on October first. A formal decision is likely to be taken next week.

The stock in all the six lakes, at present, is 12.93 lakh million litres while last year it was 9.3 lakh million litres.

The full capacity of the lakes is over 13 lakh million litres.

Mumbai gets its water supply from six lakes Modak Sagar, Tansa, Tulsi, Bhatsa, Upper Vaitarna and Vihar.

Five of the six lakes except Bhatsa have already filled up 100 per cent.

Owing to poor monsoon, BMC since June 2009 had imposed 15-30 per cent water cuts.
