College principal accused of rape

Mumbai: Chitra Salunkhe, who teaches at the Siddhartha Law College, has filed a police complaint that ex-principal Digmabar Gangurde allegedly had sexual relations with her for three to five years on the false promise of marriage.

"The case against ex-principal Gangurde was registered by the Azad Maidan police on Monday, and we are investigating the case further. The victim, who was also a law professor at Siddhartha College, had given us an application, after which a formal complaint was registered. The victim has alleged that Gangurde raped her on the pretext of marriage," said assistant police commissioner Iqbal Shaikh.

Salunkhe, 40, allegedly entered into a physical relationship with Gangurde for two years. "I knew he was married, but he claimed that his marriage was in trouble and he would soon file for divorce. After 20 years of raising my son alone as a single mother, I needed a shoulder to lean on," she said.

Salunkhe added that she never suspected he was lying because he never spent much time at home. "He hardly saw his wife. He would stay with his mother and sister most of the time," she said.

Salunkhe's suspicions were raised when he refused to be seen in public with her. "He was admitted to a hospital because of heart disease. When I went to visit him at the hospital, he said that I should leave. He was scared his wife would see me with him. When I confronted him, he told me that he did not want to end his marriage," she said.

Salunkhe, the former vice-principal of Siddhartha Law College, has filed several cases exposing corruption and malpractices in the college, in the past. Gangurde could not be reached when contacted.
