Branded as tantrik, man tries to kill self

Jaipur: A 60-year-old man attempted to commit suicide by setting himself on fire late on Saturday evening after his neighbours termed him tantrik (a man who is involved in occult practices).

The man identified as Ramprasad Bairwa, is a native of Bandikui village of Dausa district. He was spiritual person and spent lots of time worshipping Gods and Goddesses. However, the residents of his village suspected that Bairwa was involved in occult practices. The villagers even assumed that through such practices he attacked many villagers, police said.

"On Saturday evening Bairwa had a spat with some of his neighbours after the latter termed him as tantrik and who will bring misfortune in the lives of the villagers. Later on, Bairwa got enraged and poured kerosene and tried to immolate himself," the police investigating officer told DNA on Sunday.

Soon after the incident some of his relatives and neighbours doused off the flames and rushed him to a government hospital in Dausa. After examining his condition the hospital authorities referred him to the Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Hospital in Jaipur.

Informing about the Bairwa's condition police on Sunday said that the victim was under observation in SMS Hospital. He had sustained a 45% burn injuries. "Due to his old age even 45% burn injury is serious. His condition was stated to be critical according to the authorities of the SMS Hospital," police added.
