Alert resident helps foil cyber crime

Mumbai: An alert Panvel resident foiled phishing plan of cyber criminals by reporting the matter to cyber cell, who is now investigating the matter. Basant Padhiary had received a mail claiming to be from HDFC Bank and asking for details like his username and password.

"I got an email from the bank which asked me to revert with the username and password to activate my account number. It stated that if I did not revert with the details, the account will be blocked. When I clicked the link it took me to a website that resembled that of the bank," Padhiary said adding, "I also received mails from ICICI and OBC Bank stating my account number will be blocked if I don't give the details and the fact is I don't have an account with either of those banks."

According to officials from cyber cell, there have been instances of such cases and people tend to fall prey to such mails. "People easily fall prey to such mails fearing loss of money in the bank if the account gets blocked but they should know that reverting to such mails can be a risky affair. People should first check the domain of the site which will help them identify the fake and original site," official from cyber cell said.

"We have our security checks in place and we keep sending awareness mails to our customers. This kind of cyber crime is called phishing. The awareness mails we send to our customers also have security tips that one should follow and as a bank we would never ask for the confidential information of customers," HDFC Bank corporate communication official Neeraj Jha said.
