Chennai: A motorcyclist barely escaped with his life after an Audi car driven by a doctor rammed his bike before hitting a traffic signal pole early yesterday morning in Chennai. Police said the 47-year-old doctor has been arrested for driving under the influence.

The injured biker was taken to Government Rajiv Gandhi General Hospital, where he is still being treated.

The doctor did not bother to check the biker's condition after ramming the motorcycle in a high speed near a roundabout at Anna Nagar in central Chennai, police said in a statement.

After the accident, the Audi driver sped away "with the intention of escaping" and hit a traffic signal pole while taking a U-turn, police said.

A medical test showed the doctor was drunk while he was driving the Audi car, police said. He was arrested after a police complaint was filed.
