Running These Cars Get Expensive As XP100 Petrol Prices Hiked By Rs 11 Per Litre

The recent Rs 11 per litre hike in IndianOil XP100 petrol, taking the price to Rs 160 per litre in Delhi, is set to increase running costs for owners of performance-focused cars such as the Skoda Octavia vRS and Volkswagen Golf GTI. While both these cars can comfortably run on standard premium petrol, many enthusiasts voluntarily opt for XP100 because of its 100-octane rating, which better suits their high-output turbo-petrol engines.

With E20 petrol now mandated nationwide at a minimum 95 RON, owners of performance-oriented cars that are calibrated around lower ethanol tolerance or prefer purer combustion characteristics may increasingly lean towards XP100. Unlike standard pump fuel, XP100 continues to appeal because of its high-octane, low-ethanol nature, helping maintain smoother power delivery, sharper response and better consistency under hard acceleration. This policy shift effectively makes premium high-octane fuel the more natural choice for enthusiasts chasing factory-level performance feel.

Both the Octavia vRS and Golf GTI use Volkswagen Group's 2.0-litre TSI turbo-petrol engine, an engine known for delivering strong mid-range punch, quick throttle response and high-speed refinement. In such engines, higher-octane fuel helps the ECU maintain more optimal ignition timing under hard acceleration and sustained load, allowing the engine to feel smoother and more responsive. This is where XP100 becomes a preferred choice.

The higher octane value offers better resistance to knocking, especially during spirited driving, fast highway runs or repeated hard throttle inputs. As a result, owners often report cleaner power delivery, better top-end consistency and sharper throttle feel, even if the outright performance gains remain modest in stock form.

For most everyday commuting conditions, standard premium petrol remains more than sufficient. However, buyers who specifically chose cars like the Octavia vRS or Golf GTI for their performance character often prefer giving them the highest-grade fuel easily available at Indian pumps.

That preference now comes at a steeper cost. With XP100 now pricier by Rs 11 per litre, the impact will be most noticeable for owners who regularly refuel with it for weekend drives, long-distance touring or enthusiastic use.
