Mulayam Singh's shocker on rape: who said what
New Delhi: Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav's view that three men convicted of gang-raping two women in Mumbai were "poor fellows" who did not deserve the death sentence has sparked outrage. "Boys are boys, they make mistakes," the Uttar Pradesh politician said yesterday. Today he also attempted damage control with an explanation that sounded half-hearted.
  • Any woman, whether married or unmarried, if goes along with a man, with or without her consent, should be hanged. Both should be hanged.
    Abu Azmi, Samajwadi Party leader
  • We cannot be discussing these things in front of TV cameras. I have spoken to my father about the comments. I stand against every person who is insulting a woman.
Farhan Azmi, son of Abu Azmi
  • If what I am reading about my father-in-law's statements is true then me and Farhan are deeply embarrassed and ashamed.
Ayesha Takia, Farhan's wife and Bollywood actress
  • Appalled that a political stalwart like Mulayam Singh Yadav has such unacceptable views on rape. Rape is a crime that needs due justice.
    Kiran Mazumdar Shaw
  • Abu Azmi meanwhile, wants to hang women who willingly have sex. I think he needs to hang up his boots and seek medical attention ASAP.
    Farhan Akhtar, actor-director
  • Comments by such a senior leader is not only objectionable, but also it is sad and shameful. Mulayam Singh's remarks show how much respect he has for women in his heart, and how irresponsible he is towards women's security.
    Meem Afzal, Congress leader
  • Mulayam Singh is not going to form the government at the Centre at any cost.If he wants to help any of the persons (rapists), he cannot now do such a thing as the Congress has started preparation to sit in the opposition.
    Smriti Irani, BJP leader
  • The whole country is on one side and Mulayam Singh is on another side. On such emotive issues, they should refrain from making such comments.
    Venkaiah Naidu, BJP leader
  • How can any politician who wants to be the head of the government make such a statement? All women should revolt against such a statement.
    Veena Kohli, President of AIWC
  • Capital punishment is a very contentious issue but it is the worst of crimes that should not be pardoned. I completely disagree with anyone who says that 'boys will be boys, they will make mistakes.
    Vidya Balan, actress
  • When I hear comments like this, I don't know how to react as a woman, how to react as a human being. I think it is appalling and saddening that there are such people in our society, who have such small, such irrevocable thoughts.
    Dia Mirza, actress-producer
