British envoy's wife retraces Gandhi's Dandi steps

Ahmedabad: Eighty years after Mahatma Gandhi walked his historic walk, Britisher Jill Beckingham has decided to retrace it.

On Thursday she set out from Sabarmati Ashram towards Dandi.

"Here we are at the ashram and it's a very moving experience to be here at dawn. I am moved and honoured to raise money for poor children through this walk," said Jill Beckingham, British citizen and the wife of British Deputy Commissioner to India.

Jill will cover this 360-kilometre walk in about 20 days during which she aims to raise Rs 10 lakh for Gujarat and Mumbai NGOs.

"Mahatma Gandhi took out the Dandi March against British government representatives, and today after so many years a British representative has embarked on such a yatra. It goes to show that the Mahatma's teachings on peace and welfare of the poor are revered even today," said Mahesh Kothari, a Gandhian.
