Travel hell at UK airports

London: What do you do when you are stuck at the airport with nowhere to go - make friends with fellow travelers? Sleep on a makeshift bed? Or even try to meditate?

These are some of the ways in which travellers in the UK are trying to kill time as freezing weather continues to disrupt air travel.

Heathrow Airport operated a "reduced flight schedule" on Tuesday as authorities warned that delays and cancellations could run beyond Christmas Day Many stranded passengers complained of a severe lack of information from the airlines and airport staff.

"It's been terrible. There's no information, nothing. Nobody's saying nothing to us," said a stranded passenger.

One family, on route from Sydney to Switzerland, said they had no idea when they would be on a flight.

"We think we're on a flight for 6.30 in the morning but that board over there says that flight's cancelled to Germany, the place you can check up here is closed," said another.

Some said they never faced such problems at other European airports.

"In Stockholm, at the airport, they claim that they can clean every runway in 10 minutes, at any time. And I have been flying back and forth between Brussels and Stockholm and I've never had any problems," said a Belgian passenger.

There were similar scenes at Kings Cross St Pancras rail station, as many arrived early and queued up, hoping to board the Eurostar.

"We tried to get away on Saturday to Luton Airport but the flight was cancelled, so we have to leave today," said a traveller.

British Airports Authority (BAA) has been criticised for its handling of the crisis at Heathrow, but chief executive Colin Matthews said they were working hard to restore services.

"The weather for the following few days is still forecast to be cold and with snow, and I'm not going to make a timetable on that because it will depend on the weather. Right now our priority is to clear every single stand so we can use the capacity that's available on the northern runway, and as soon as we have done that we'll then turn our attention to the southern runway," he said.

BAA has also promised an investigation into events at Heathrow.
