Singapore:
A British national, who works as an editor of an inflight magazine in Singapore, was on Thursday fined 10,000 dollars for spitting on a police officer while being arrested in a drunken state.
34-year-old Forgan Duncan, who had pleaded guilty to spitting on the face of police officer Walid Jamblatt Abdullah in December last year, was spared a jail term.
Duncan was found lying on the ground along Spottiswoode Park Road, off the Central Business District, after having too many drinks and trying to make his way back to his residence, reported the Channel News Asia.
Two police officers, who were notified, checked on him. Duncan, however, challenged the officers to arrest him. But before he could be handcuffed he turned and spat on Abdullah's face.
One more charge of behaving in a disorderly manner was also taken into consideration.
Duncan's lawyer said in his mitigation plea that his client was "extremely remorseful, unconditionally apologetic and thoroughly ashamed for his conduct".
The prosecution had pressed for a custodial sentence, but District Judge Ronald Gwee said a high fine would suffice.
Duncan, the editor of Tiger Airways' inflight magazine, could have been jailed up to four years, the report said.
