Kerala Woman Lawmaker Accused of Biting Rival Politician Files Police Complaint

The incident happened when Kerala Finance Minister KM Mani was presenting the Budget

Thiruvananthapuram:

The woman lawmaker seen biting the shoulder of a rival politician during recent clashes in the Kerala assembly, has filed a police complaint alleging that she was the one who was attacked.

Jameela Prakasam, a legislator of the opposition Left Democratic Party or LDF, was caught on camera biting K Sivadasan Nair in the middle of unprecedented chaos in the assembly during Finance Minister KM Mani's budget speech on March 13.

But the 53-year-old claims she only responded after the Congress legislator 'misbehaved' with her.

She had told NDTV earlier that Mr Nair deserved it. "The MLA twisted my arm from the back. His other arm came resting on my waist. I was falling behind and I could feel a knee kick me at my back. I turned to see it was Sivadasan. I warned him to leave me or else I would bite him. He challenged me to do so and that's when I bit him," she said.

Mr Nair has disputed that version, saying, "I was standing beside Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, trying to protect him, when this happened."

The fight erupted in the assembly as the opposition tried to stop Finance Minister Mani from presenting the Budget.

Opposition parties have demanded Mr Mani's resignation over allegations that he accepted a bribe of Rs. 1 crore to renew licences of bars that were shut down last year.

While Mr Mani read the budget speech, opposition lawmakers clashed with the assembly's staff, toppled the Speaker's chair and tore out his mike.

Mr Mani belongs to the Kerala Congress (M) and is a key ally of the state's ruling Congress. In December last year, Kerala's Vigilance and Anti-Corruption bureau booked him as the first accused in the "bar scam case."
