Kollam:

One thing the world is waiting for is the news of the capture of LTTE supremo V Prabhakaran. While so far, there is no sign of him, NDTV travelled to Kollam district in Kerala to trace his family.

Janaki amma, LTTE chief Prabhakaran's 77-year-old cousin, was initially wary of taking to this reporter.

She showed us a post card sent to her mother by her uncle from Jaffna 56 years ago.

The letter said her uncle Velupillai had named his baby boy Prabhakaran.

Janaki amma says that was the last her family heard from her uncle. She's never met or spoken to Prabhakaran, but is now asking him to lay down arms.

"Let the suffering end, you must surrender my brother."

Janaki amma says she realised that her cousin Prabhakaran is the same the world knows as the LTTE chief only in 1991, when investigating agencies knocked at her door after Rajiv Gandhi's assassination to enquire whether her family knew where Prabhakaran was.

A house in Kollam district once belonged to Prabhakaran's father. Later, he sold it and left for Sri Lanka after which Janaki amma and her family moved to a hut.
