Man allegedly beaten for criticising Akali Dal in song
Chandigarh: The Mohali Police today gave a clean chit to the workers of Akali Dal, who were accused by a local Punjabi singer of assault. Babbu Chandigarhia alias Shubash had alleged that he was thrashed by members of Shiromani Akali Dal at a marriage function in Mohali near Chandigarh on Monday night.

According to Mr Chandigarhia, the group of men assaulted him after he refused to sing at a marriage function which was organised at the lawns of Punjab Cricket Association stadium. He said he was at the function as a guest and not as a singer. This infuriated the group and they assaulted him.

Another motive has emerged behind the attack. According to sources, the real motive behind the assault was a song that the singer had uploaded on YouTube that criticised the Akali Dal.

Sources said the party was organised in connection with the marriage of a distant relative of Akali Dal leader Balwant Singh Ramoowalia. Mr Ramoowalia, however, told NDTV the incident happened more than an hour after he left the venue and no worker from his party was present when the singer was assaulted.

The Mohali Police has also refuted Mr Chandigarhia's charges against Akali Dal workers. "We are analysing the video CD of the function... But there is no political angle. It was a normal argument that went out of hand," said GPS Bhullar, Mohali Senior Superintendent of Police.
