Indian National, Kidnapped in Herat, Located, Say Afghan Sources; 1 Arrested

The 47-year-old Indian director of the Jesuit Refugee Service, Prem Kumar, was abducted in Afghanistan.

New Delhi: The Afghanistan forces have arrested a man in connection with the abduction of 47-year-old Indian national, Father Alexis Prem Kumar Antonysamy. Sources in the Afghanistan Police, meanwhile, said Father Kumar has been located in the Gilan district of Herat, the capital of the western province of the same name.

Father Kumar, country director of Jesuit Refugee Service, was kidnapped on Monday by unidentified armed men when he was on a visit to a JRS-supported school for Afghan refugee children from Iran and Pakistan.

He was kidnapped from the school as he was about to return to Herat, the JRS said.

"I appeal to all Afghans to release my brother. I ask with folded hands, please let him go. We'd be happy if we hear he's safe," Father Kumar's brother told NDTV.

The Indian consul general in Herat has been in touch with local authorities. Sources said that Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj has been personally monitoring the case and that the kidnappers have made no demands yet.

The abduction came nearly 10 days after the attack on the Indian consulate in Herat by four heavily-armed gunmen carrying rocket-propelled grenades and machine guns.

The attackers were subsequently killed by the security forces who repelled the attack on May 23. On May 29, the Indian mission in Herat had issued an advisory asking its nationals to exercise extreme caution while venturing out.

JRS has been working in Afghanistan since 2008 accompanying returnees home from exile in Iran and Pakistan and providing education and healthcare services in Bamiyan, Kabul and Herat.
