Amethi: Priyanka Gandhi today once again took on Narendra Modi directly and urged the BJP's 63-year-old prime ministerial candidate to refrain from "bachpana" (immaturity).

"They call my brother a shahzada (prince), they say he is funnier than a comedian...You want to be PM, why are you being childish? Respect that position. Tell people what you're going to do for them. Talk about employment," she said at a rally in Amethi, the parliamentary constituency of Rahul Gandhi, her older brother who is fronting the Congress campaign for the national election.

Their mother, Sonia, is Congress president. The party is seen to be headed for one of it's worst-ever electoral results. The BJP, under Mr Modi, is forecast to win the most seats.

Priyanka said that in his time, her father, former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, had also been ridiculed by his opponents. "When Rajiv Gandhi spoke of computers many years ago, they laughed at him and called him 'the computer boy'. He had a long term picture in mind. Today, the same people make fun of Rahul Gandhi. He is also thinking of the big picture," she said.

Mr Modi has been deriding Mr Gandhi as a dilettante with no clear political vision or qualifications other than his famous last name. At a rally recently, Mr Modi said that Mr Gandhi's outlandish remarks will put hit TV comedian Kapil Sharma out of business. (Rahul Gandhi is funnier than comedian Kapil Sharma: Narendra Modi)

Priyanka is not contesting the election but in the last few days, she has launched an aggressive attack on Mr Modi, who has alleged that her husband, Robert Vadra, has amassed an inexplicably large real estate portfolio powered by sweetheart land deals in states like Haryana where the Congress is in power.

The Congress has flatly rejected the charges. On Sunday, Priyanka accused the BJP of scrambling "like a pack of rats" to taint her husband after the party released a video titled "Damaad Shree" or "the son-in-law" that expounds on the opposition's charges against Mr Vadra.
