Still Grappling with Trauma, Charlie Hebdo Team Publishes 'Survivor Edition'

People queue up to buy the newest edition of Charlie Hebdo.

Paris, France: The surviving Charlie Hebdo team, which began working barely two days after the terror attack that killed several of their colleagues on January 7, brought out a fresh issue that hit the stands on Wednesday.

Both the Charlie Hebdo team and the newspaper Liberation, which hosted the team in their office, are under heavy security cover.

Before the release of the Charlie Hebdo "survivor edition", the team, while speaking to journalists in Paris, said they wanted to show that they will not "cede" to the extremists who wanted to silence them.

They worked under severely trying circumstances.

Some were in severe trauma as they were present during the attack and witnessed their colleagues dying around them.

When asked if he feared for their safety, Mark Sedo, world editor of Liberation, told NDTV that in the short term, they would probably be safe because they had heavy security cover.

"But the history of Charlie Hebdo shows that the jihadists have a long memory. The threats came in 2005, the first attack in 2011 and the massacre in 2014. We don't know if the French government will protect us for the next ten years," he said.

In view of the brutal attack on the Charlie Hebdo journalists, perhaps the new edition will be received differently, perhaps not. It will be circulated around the world.

It will be published in French, English, Turkish and Arabic languages and translated into many more.

Charlie Hebdo's editor-in-chief Gerard Biard said the new issue was produced with "both pain and with joy".

During the tribute to the terror victims in the French Parliament, Prime Minister Manuel Valls said, "We are at war against terrorism".

Charlie Hebdo journalists say those who attack them lack humour. But the magazine is determined to preserve its "radical" spirit. They claim they want to show the world why some people read the weekly and why some never will.
