Washington:
The commander of the elite Navy SEALs, which undertook the operation to kill Osama in Abbottabad, met members of the Congressional committee in a closed-door meeting on Wednesday.
(Read: The men who went to Osama's bedroom shot him)Vice Admiral William McRaven briefed the committee on exactly how the Osama operation was carried out. A former Navy SEAL, Vice Admiral McRaven has spent years hunting down Osama bin Laden and is the man who designed and oversaw the Abbottabad raid.
The experienced counter-terrorism expert had handpicked the men for the mission two months ago and had overseen weeks of rigorous training for the operation.
Here's how he described the operation to the Congressional committee:
- Vice Admiral William McRaven said the SEALs tried to burst through a door at bin Laden's compound
- When they encountered a brick wall behind it, they had to blast their way through it
- They found two couriers and a woman on the first floor, all of whom were killed in fierce gunfire
- Barricades were strewn all along the stairs leading to bin Laden's room
- When the SEALs entered his room, bin Laden's wife rushed at the leading SEAL, she was shot in the leg
- Osama was standing in the middle of the room
- There was lots of movement, it was dark and confusing
- The leading SEAL shot Osama in the chest, another shot Osama in the head, finished him
