Mullaperiyar issue: Tamil Nadu deploys strike force on border

Madurai: With the Centre's experts panel set to submit its report on the Mullaperiyar Dam issue, the state police beefed up security in the border areas on Sunday.

Apprehending unrest, a strike force headed by a Deputy Superintendent of Police has been deployed at Cumbum Mettu, Kumily and Bodi Mettu areas.

Theni district Additional Superintendent of Police Selvaraj said, "We have deployed 50 additional police personnel in the Cumbum Mettu area and all of them are checking vehicles passing through the border areas."

The Tamil Nadu police was also reportedly exchanging information with their counterparts in Kerala to maintain peace and to provide safety to the Ayyappa devotees who visit Sabarimala. "We have advised the Ayyappa devotees to take extra precaution and also to inform us if they face any trouble during their journey," he said. On Sunday, devotees were asked to wait for a few hours near Cumbum and proceed only after the force ensured their safety by checking the situation in Kerala.

The police official also held a meeting to assess the situation in the border and additional forces are expected to be deployed soon.
