Vice Chancellor Enters Jadavpur University Campus, Students Protest

Students of Jadavpur University held a massive protest on September 20.

Kolkata: The Jadavpur University in Kolkata witnessed fresh protests on Thursday morning when Vice Chancellor Abhijit Chakraborti arrived at his office.

As the news of Mr Chakraborti's arrival spread, students rushed to the administrative building and immediately sat on dharna. They also shouted slogans demanding the Vice Chancellor's resignation. The students have been protesting against Mr Chakraborti for calling the police in to break up a student protest last week. Meanwhile, Pro-Vice Chancellor Siddhartha allegedly submitted his resignation today.

A general body meeting has decided that Mr Chakraborti can come and go as he pleases, but students have said they will continue to protest and boycott classes.

"We will continue our agitation and our class boycott," said Rwiti, a student, adding, "We are waiting for the VC to come and talk to us." Shounak Mukhopadhyay, another student, said, "The way the VC has entered his office today is a shame. We want his resignation."

The university's chancellor and Governor KN Tripathi, however, issued a stern warning and said the students must immediately return to class and restore normalcy on campus. He also added that "outsiders are provoking trouble at the university" and that must not be allowed.

Following a High Court order on Wednesday, police set up post at two Jadavpur University gates on Thursday, which was slammed by students and teachers who are members of the Jadavpur University Teachers Association (JUTA).

"This is not acceptable in the campus, that police will regulate who will enter and who will not. We condemn it. We also are sticking to our demand for the VC's resignation," JUTA member Prof Nilanjana Gupta said.

The association will send a letter to the Governor tomorrow stating its position.
