Jammu and Kashmir Sarpanch Shot By Suspected Militants, Dies in Hospital

Srinagar: Suspected militants attacked a sarpanch or village head in Shopian district of Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday night.

The gunmen stopped the car of Mohammad Sultan Bhat, near his residence and pumped bullets at him from close range, the police said. The incident happened at 9.30 pm.

Mr Bhat was rushed to hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

"Tomorrow my party will formally request the ECI to review security in this area. We are concerned about gaps in the security grid. The EC code forbids me from any engagement with the security forces so the EC is now responsible for plugging any loopholes (sic)," Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said in a series of tweets.

The killing comes a day after a grenade attack in Srinagar in which eight people were injured.

On November 28, ten people had lost their lives in militant attack in Arnia sector, while on Saturday militants triggered a blast targeting an Army vehicle near the Line of Control in Poonch, but the troops escaped unhurt.
