Concerned over growing opposition by locals to the proposed Jaitapur nuclear project, Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan is likely to meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in Delhi on Tuesday to discuss about the overall issue, sources in the state secretariat said.
The Jaitapur issue was discussed threadbare in a meeting held by Chavan in Mantralaya with his deputy Ajit Pawar, Home Minister R R Patil and Industries Minister Narayan Rane on Monday.
According to a secretariat official, the ministers sought to know about the Centre's stand on the 9,900 MW nuclear power project in the background of strong opposition by locals and death of a protester last week in the police firing.
The "ambiguous" stand adopted by Union Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh on the project was also a cause of concern for Maharashtra government baffled by the spate of agitations against the project, the official said.
Chavan will discuss all the issues regarding the project in detail with the Centre and then only further decision on the course would be taken, the official said.
