New Delhi:
A sub-inspector of Vikaspuri police station was arrested today by Delhi government's anti-corruption branch for allegedly taking bribe to recommend a revolver licence following a sting operation by a businessman.
The sub-inspector (SI) identified as Joseph Johnson was arrested in the evening following a trap laid by the anti-corruption branch officials near the police station, Rajendra Kumar, Secretary to Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, said.
Mr Kumar said a complaint was registered on the helpline by the businessman saying the SI was demanding money for recommending a revolver licence.
"According to the complainant, the SI had demanded Rs 20,000 but after negotiations, it came down to Rs 10,000. The complainant had already paid Rs 1,000 in advance and today the SI was nabbed while taking the balance amount of Rs 9,000," Mr Kumar told PTI.
This is the third arrest by the anti-corruption branch after the launch of the anti-corruption helpline number 1031 by the Delhi Chief Minister.
On January 11, two constables were arrested by the vigilance department on the charge of extortion following a sting operation by a vendor.
Earlier, a staff of an Assistant Registrar in the Co-operative Group Housing Societies at Parliament Street was apprehended on the charge of taking a bribe following a complaint to the helpline. However, the Assistant Registrar fled from the spot.
Mr Kejriwal had launched the first anti-corruption helpline on January 8.
Today, the helpline received 3268 calls from 8 AM till 6.30 PM, out of which around 31 were just normal complaints and "around 20 cases, as of now, are ripe for laying traps", sources said.
According to sources, there are 60 lines of the helpline and 30 officials supervise them and take calls.
