City's BRTS becomes benchmark, gets national award for mobility

Jaipur: The newly-introduced Bus Rapid Transport System (BRTS) in Jaipur has become a national benchmark for management of mass transport systems in India. The Rajasthan government was awarded Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), Urban Mobility Award-2010 by the Union government on Sunday. The award was selected among mass rapid transport systems introduced in other states.

Officials with the transport department said that, "Jaipur City Transport Services Ltd BRTS was awarded the JNNURM Urban Mobility Award -- 2010 for new technological applications and innovation". Several other cities in India have adopted this Jaipur model for their BRTS and other city transport operations in the country. The award was given away at the Urban Mobility India conference held in New Delhi, the official said.

Transport minister Brij Kishore Sharma received the award from Union minister for urban development Jaipal Reddy. "As part of the conference, awards were distributed for best mass transit projects selected among the JNNURM projects," the official said. The bus rapid transport system was introduced among the projects for new transport system in Jaipur.
