Telangana: Hyderabad a fortress ahead of 'chalo assembly' march

Hyderabad: The 'Chalo Assembly' call for Friday given by the Telangana Joint Action Committee, an umbrella organisation of several pro-Telangana groups, has turned Hyderabad, especially the legislative Assembly, into a fortress.

Here are the 10 latest developments in the story:

  1. Hyderabad police have denied permission for the march and warned of stern action against those attempting to break the law.

  2. Huge police force from the state and 20 companies of central paramilitary forces have been deployed within 2 km-radius of the assembly premises.

  3. There are traffic restrictions on all roads leading to assembly. Five flyovers - Khairtabad, Narayanguda, Basheerbagh, Telugu Thalli and Masab Tank - near the assembly have been closed. They will remain closed on Friday.

  4. 17 check-posts have been put up in Hyderabad; 58 in Cyberabad.

  5. Vehicular traffic will be diverted at 21 points in both Hyderabad and Secunderabad to prevent people from heading towards assembly.

  6. Prohibitory orders banning meetings and rallies have been imposed in Hyderabad police commissionerate, which covers the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad and also in Cyberabad police commissionerate, which covers the IT district of Cyberabad and several areas surrounding the state capital.

  7. The police commissioners have announced closure of all liquor shops.

  8. Schools and colleges have declared a holiday as a precautionary measure.

  9. The work in government departments, courts and even Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is likely to be hit as a section of employees supporting Telangana demand have threatened to go on flash strike to protest what they call "repressive" measures by the police.

  10. Earlier today, pro-Telangana students clashed with police on the Osmania University campus in Hyderabad for the second consecutive day, demanding that they be allowed to take out the rally.
