Tel Aviv:

Loud explosions were heard as rocket trails streaked the sky in Tel Aviv where the Iron Dome intercepted incoming missiles reportedly fired by Iran on Friday amid the escalating conflict that has engulfed the region.

In scenes witnessed by NDTV's Aditya Raj Kaul on the seventh day since the conflict began, scores of missiles fired by Iran were seen above Tel Aviv as Israel's projectile-defense system Iron Dome efficiently intercepted them. Waves of explosions were heard over the city, which resembled a ghost town.

This came at a time firefighters worked to contain a blaze at a residential building near Israel's commercial hub, even as state media said the "heart of Tel Aviv" was struck. A projectile hit a building on the outskirts of Tel Aviv, forcing residents to evacuate.

After the barrage, Israel's emergency services, the Magen David Adom (MDA), said its teams had visited several reported impact sites but that there were no casualties. Israeli police said it was "currently handling scenes involving fallen projectiles in central Israel", adding that there was "damage" but no injuries.

Israel, in turn, targeted Beirut's southern suburbs, an area the Israeli military said a Hezbollah stronghold. AFPTV images showed mangled buildings and burned-out vehicles after heavy Israeli bombing overnight, with tens of thousands fleeing the destruction.

In Tehran, the war has emptied the usually traffic-jammed streets but residents told AFP that security forces are keeping a tight grip on the population. The powerful Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) "has closed almost every main street with armed personnel and heavy machine guns to frighten people", a 30-year-old Tehran resident told AFP. "The people are the real enemy in their eyes, not the Americans. Their extremists say first you have to deal with the enemy at home."

After US and Israel traded attacks with Iran almost a week ago, the conflict spread through the Middle East region, leading to the killing of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The fresh wave of attacks is Israel's extended campaign against Hezbollah, which has vowed revenge for Khamenei's killing.

Israel has vowed to escalate to a new phase in the Middle East war, which has upended the world's energy and transport sectors, and brought chaos to even usually peaceful areas of the volatile region. The war has also hammered global markets and sent crude oil prices soaring by about a fifth in the week since fighting erupted, bringing operations in the critical Strait of Hormuz to a near halt.

According to Iran's health ministry, US and Israeli strikes on the country have killed 926 people. The US has so far lost six of its troops.

President Donald Trump said it would be a "waste of time" currently to send ground troops into Iran, but has insisted he would "have to be involved" in choosing Iran's next leader.
