LPG Tanker With 28 Indian Crew Members Attacked In Iranian Waters, All Safe

An LPG tanker which had 28 Indian crew members on board was attacked in Iranian waters on Friday as tensions between the United States and Iran continue to escalate. However, the Indian Embassy in Iran confirmed that all Indian crew members are safe and that they have been in close contact with relevant authorities.

The Embassy of India in Tehran confirmed in a post on X that the Mozambique-flagged LPG tanker called DISHA was attacked earlier in the day today.

In a post on X, the Embassy wrote, "The Embassy of India in Tehran is aware that the Mozambique-flagged LPG tanker DISHA came under attack in Iranian territorial waters earlier today. The vessel has 28 Indian crew members on board. The Embassy has been in close contact with the relevant authorities and has confirmed that all Indian crew members are safe."

Although the mission said that it continues to monitor the situation closely and that it remains in touch with the concerned authorities, it did not provide details about the nature of the attack or the condition of the vessel.

The update comes as External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Thursday stressed that "under no circumstances can attacks on seafarers, civilian shipping or infrastructure be countenanced."

India has repeatedly asserted that the deliberate strikes on maritime crew members, non-military vessels, and crucial infrastructure are entirely unacceptable.

"India stresses that international waterways must remain safe and unimpeded, fully in consonance with international law," Jaishankar said, adding that "under no circumstances can attacks on seafarers, civilian shipping or infrastructure be countenanced."

One Indian Killed In Attack On Commercial Vessel On Transiting Black Sea

In a separate development on Friday, the Ministry of External Affairs confirmed that an Indian national was killed after a commercial vessel that was carrying 10 crew members was attacked near Russia in the Red Sea last Saturday.

In a late night statement, the MEA said that the commercial vehicle MV OMORFI came under attack on July 18 while transiting the Black Sea, "reportedly in Russian territorial waters".

"As per available information, one Indian national tragically lost his life in the attack. We extend our deepest condolences to the bereaved family of the victim," the MEA said in its statement.

It revealed that at the time of the attack, 10 crew members were on board, including three Indian nationals.

"The other two Indian nationals on board are reported to be safe," the ministry said in its statement.
